For the first time in 1848, William Finn, a Mexican-American War veteran, settled permanently in Highland Park. On the land where he built a house along the Mississippi River, the University of St. Thomas now occupies it. This neighborhood used to be part of Fort Snelling’s reservation, but it was renamed Reserve Township after the government opened it up for sale in the mid-1850s. As a result of a growing population, approximately 5,000 acres (20 km2) were sold in 1854 for $1.25 per acre. After this land sale, Ramsey County became available for settlement, making this the last densely populated area in Saint Paul. Highland Park was not incorporated into the city until 1887, when Reserve Township was purchased by Saint Paul.
